The nutcracker as performed by the Russian State Ballet at Llandudno's Venue Cymru theatre is both magical and enchanting. Read on for full review...

The Nutcracker is a charming and magical tale known and loved by many. A story telling the tale of a young girl and her nutcracker prince who comes alive and together they defeat the Mouse King and his army.

Tchaikovsky’s score is easily recognisable and performed magnificently by the live orchestra, invoking the spirit of Christmas even in mid-October.

Watching the Russian state ballet performing at Llandudno’s Venue Cymru theatre is an absolute delight. Enjoyed by what appears to be a full house.

The ballet opens with a delightful set that is full of billowing fabrics and twinkling lights. Our beautiful heroine; who, whether you know her as Clara, Marie, Maria or Masha, is instantly recognisable. She is cleverly set apart by her simple, yet elegant white dress.

The dancers exude talent and expertly perform moves with just the right touch of humour, which makes this a really enjoyable treat.

As the ballet progresses, set changes are seamless and cleverly done. The mouse king’s army is delightfully menacing and playful in equal parts and the story is brought to life.

All eyes fall to Clara and the Nutcracker as the main characters in the show, beautifully portrayed and expertly enacted. However, the Sugar Plum Fairy and her partner steal the show and perform a never-ending display of strength and skill. A tireless performance that astounded at every turn.

If you ever have the chance to see this ballet, take it, you will not be disappointed!
